Scarlet runner bean - Hope seedsScarlet Runner:  This heritage bean grows very tall so requires a trellis for support. The beans are flat, long and have a slightly ‘fuzzy’ feel.  It can be eaten at the snap, shell or dry stage.

Many people grow it as an ornamental, the beautiful red flowers attract hummingbirds.  Pick and eat fresh young beans for endless blooming.  If the beans aren’t as young, for best flavor and enjoyment, peel both sides to remove a ‘string’ and cut french style.

They will not be killed by Fall frosts as quickly as bush beans, and often produce until October.  Our FPL Seed Library also has a small stock of white runners, which are similar but have a white flower and a white seed.
