SEED OF THE WEEK: Calendula Posted April 28, 2016 by Edee Klee

Calendula (Medium)Calendula is a somewhat hardy annual, not be harmed by a light frost either in the spring or fall.  It is an easy-to-grow flower that is edible and also very good for the skin.  It attracts bugs, especially aphids, and will protect other garden plants from pests.

Our garden calendula has had a long history.  It was originally growing in a garden member’s grandparents’ garden.  The seed has gone from garden to garden to where it is now growing in the Marysville Community Garden.  Garden Director Carol Muncer’s three lovely grandchildren picked the seeds we now have available in the FPL Seed Library under the patient guidance of their babysitter.  Quite a job as the children were all under 3 years of age.
